The battle of Gandesa was a military confrontation that occurred in early April 1938, during the Spanish Civil War. The resistance carried out by the international brigade allowed the republican evacuation of material and men on the other side of the Ebro River. The confrontation has its origin at the time the XV International Brigade was entrenched in this town to try to stop the offensive of Franco's troops, which since the beginning of the Aragon Offensive advanced unstoppable. The internationals of the XV Brigade had been withdrawing since the beginning of this offensive, when the Republican front collapsed. In spite of the exploits of the interbrigadistas defenders, Gandesa fell on April 3 and with her about 140 British brigades were taken prisoner.
